ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP

Drawing from Dr. Gabor Maté's groundbreaking work with addiction in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside and his influential book "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts," this workshop offers a revolutionary perspective on understanding and treating addiction. Rather than viewing addiction as a genetic predisposition or discrete medical condition, we will explore how early childhood experiences and trauma shape both the neurobiology of addiction and the emotional patterns that drive addictive behaviors. Through recognizing the roots of addiction we can develop a compassionate approach towards addiction offering a path to restoration of wholeness and health.

This workshop presents addiction as the result of a complex interplay among personal history, emotional development, neurological development, brain chemistry, and the substances or behaviors that become the focus of addiction. Rather than viewing addiction as a medical condition distinct from the lives it affects, we examine how it emerges from and is inseparable from the life circumstances of those who suffer from it.

Through an integration of current brain and addiction research from around the globe, participants will gain a thorough understanding of how personal history shapes both brain development and addictive patterns. The workshop avoids simplistic self-help remedies, instead promoting deep self-understanding and compassion as the first key to healing and wellness.

We'll explore how current health, social, and criminal justice policies impact addiction treatment and recovery, while examining more compassionate and effective approaches. This comprehensive approach helps participants understand addiction not as a discrete phenomenon confined to an unfortunate or weak-willed few, but as a complex response to trauma and emotional pain that requires a holistic understanding for effective treatment and recovery.

The workshop challenges conventional wisdom about addiction while offering practical, compassionate approaches to healing that acknowledge the complex interplay between personal history, societal conditions, and human suffering.
