ABOUT THIS SUMMIT

We gathered online on Saturday March 5th, 2022 for our One-Day Summit to deepen our somatic healing journey around the theme “Embodied Transformation & Liberation”.

No one who has ever touched liberation could possibly want anything other than liberation for everyone.
— Rev. angel Kyodo williams

In this One-Day Summit we explore body-based practices to liberate and transform ourselves and our communities from oppressive social systems and to sustainably reconnect to our full potential of agency and power.  Through a variety of practices and teachings we’ll explore somatic approaches to changing the behaviours and mindsets that keep us stuck, how to liberate ourselves and our communities from these painful patterns, and how to move towards a place of authentic growth and transformation.

This summit’s world-leading embodiment experts include Kai Cheng Thom, Michelle Boulé, Shelly Tygielski, Chara Caruthers, and Dr. Leticia Nieto.

The Revolution Starts Within

A 75-MINUTE EXPERIENTIAL SESSION

Many activist approaches to social change work focus heavily (and rightfully) on external change - on systems of oppression and domination that entrap whole communities and societies.  Yet what we often miss in activist circles is the inner conflicts that inevitably emerge in the face of challenging conversations and situations: How can we work to undo our own privilege while also acknowledging our survival needs and past traumas? How can we extend kindness and compassion to others while also holding them accountable to harms they might have caused? Can we hold on to our personal opinions, nuance, and growing process while joining with the intensity of larger group movements?

This workshop will provide frameworks and somatic tools for navigating internal conflicts on our way to liberation.

Connecting Our Inner Work to the Other World: Moving Beyond Despair and Showing Up in a Troubling World

A 75-MINUTE EXPERIENTIAL SESSION

We live in daunting times and as an act of self-preservation it is sometimes easier for us to bury our heads in the sand, throw our hands up in despair, or default to fear. Many of us choose to focus on the inner work, understanding that there is an inherent connection between the inner work and the outer world, that in fact, the best version of the world has to start with the best version of ourselves.

However, many of us get stuck in the self-help cycle, which means we fail to show up and sustain action as it relates to issues that really matter to us and struggling communities that we care about.

When we learn to use the inner world as a source of power that we can tap into and expand out into the world, that is where real change happens. Inner work has an ROI, or Ripples of Influence, and is just as essential as external forces in transforming our institutions and society for the better. Every great movement for social change has been animated by people who have striven to understand, harness, and apply the power of the human heart.

In this workshop, based on Shelly’s critically acclaimed book, Sit Down to Rise Up: How Radical Self-Care Can Change the World, we will:

  • Connect to a deeper sense of purpose and desire to show up.

  • Learn how to consciously move into an Empathy-Action mode.

  • Understand the tools to build successful movements.

  • Collaborate more effectively to deepen social impact.

The Art of Living Like You Love Yourself

A 75-MINUTE EXPERIENTIAL SESSION

They say you can never truly love anyone else until you love yourself first. If this is true, how effective can we be in our roles as practitioners, teachers, care givers, holders of space if our own internal spaces are unexamined and unloved? In this session we’ll explore key ways of being that keep you stuck, and uncover insights and practices for liberating yourself from the patterns of thinking and doing that leave you feeling unworthy and unloved.

When Change Works: Embodied Collective Memory and Imaginal Future

A 75 MINUTE EXPERIENTIAL SESSION

Engagement in social justice is guided by best moments. What are patterns and conditions in moments of vitality, congruence, wisdom, passion, and joy? Bodies carry trauma. Bodies also hold narratives of growth, connection, and engagement revealed through psychodrama as shape, gesture, poem, and image.

“When it works, what is it like, and why does it work?” Through movement, enactment, rhythm, poetry, and song, stories of resourced moments in social engagement will emerge. Based on Beyond Inclusion, Beyond Empowerment.
